The White Diet

After your teeth whitening treatment, your enamel’s pores are open, making them susceptible to stains. As a result, this can reverse the whitening benefits. For sustainable results, we recommend you follow the White Diet for 24-48 hours after whitening treatment.

Remaining conscious of your diet will help with keeping your teeth whiter for longer. Once the pores close, which usually happens within 24-48 hours after the procedure, you can resume regular eating habits.

What to Avoid:

Try to avoid foods and drinks with colour. The more colourful, the more likely it will stain your teeth.

For example:

  • Lemonade, orange juice, acidic fruit juices, colas and fizzy drinks, energy drinks
  • Tea and coffee
  • Red wine, stout or dark beer, mixed drinks, coloured cocktails, dark spirits
  • Coloured fruit and vegetables, i.e. capsicum, carrots, oranges, broccoli, spinach and green vegetables, dark and milk chocolate, rye and dark bread, tomatoes and red sauces such as spaghetti sauce, curries and pickles, beetroot, berries, butter/margarine, coloured lollies

What You Can Have:

  • Water, both still and sparkling and milk
  • Vodka, gin, white wine & champagne
  • Chicken, turkey, white fish, white rice, white pasta, white sauce, cauliflower, cottage cheese, potatoes (no skin), bananas, peeled apples

Extra Cautions:

  • Avoid extremely hot or cold liquids, they reverse whitening benefits as they change the temperature of your teeth. The temperature change (hot and cold cycling) causes teeth to expand and contract, allowing stains to penetrate your teeth. We recommend very minimal coffee. If this is not practical for you, we recommend drinking with a straw to reduce the amount of time they contact your teeth.

Avoid foods and drinks that are acidic. Acidic foods and beverages open up the pores of the tooth enamel, allowing stains to penetrate your teeth. Use a straw to help minimise the contact of these substances with your teeth.

Cut back on drinking and smoking. Frequent consumption of alcoholic drinks and heavy smoking can reverse the effects of teeth whitening. Many alcoholic beverages such as wine have tannins that can stain the teeth. If you cannot quit drinking and smoking, we recommend reducing the frequency.

Use smudge-proof lipstick to keep lipstick from getting on your teeth as this can stain teeth. We also recommend you do not use tainted lip balms.
